Now, let’s not wait or hesitate - let’s get into all the black-owned cannabis brands in Detroit, and Michigan you should try now! Without further ado - here are the top 5 black-owned Michigan cannabis brands.
Black-owned and woman-owned is Calyxeum, run by a duo of Detroit natives, Rebecca Colett and LaToyia Rucker. Calyxeum was launched in 2019, and since then, they’ve grown into a completely integrated brand. That includes two growing facilities, a processing facility, and now a retail store in Detroit.
Calyxeum offers a wide variety of products, including its signature brand of organic and responsibly cultivated flower and edible products. More than giving back to the Michigan cannabis community, Calyxeum is driven to give back to the community in which they do business and where they call home.
Speaking of Detroit, it’s hard to talk about cannabis and black-owned (and the city!) without talking about former Lions players Rob Sims and Calvin Johnson. The owners of Primitiv Group, Sims and Johnson, AKA Megatron, are passionate about the plant’s therapeutic benefits, specifically for athletes and everyday ailments.
Their brand offers flower, pre-rolls, edibles, and concentrates, and it has its own retail store on the west side in Niles, Michigan.
Another athlete and black-owned brand is none other than Viola, whose owner is none other than Al Harrington. The former NBA star founded the company and named it after his grandmother (Viola) due to her benefiting greatly from the plant during a battle with glaucoma.
Viola’s products are sold now across the US, and even in Canada, too. As a brand, its mission is to increase equity and opportunity for black and brown Americans in the United States.
Brandon Riley, co-founder of Noble Road, told Metro Times recently, that he got into the industry due to the shortage of black people in the edible space, saying, “There's a real shortage, and it's a problem.”
Today, the company produces cookies, gummies, and distillates at an old bakery in Lansing, and can be found in retailers across Metro Detroit.
Funky Extracts is owned by Detroit native Jujuan "Funk" Coleman, who uses full spectrum cannabis extract to infuse gummies versus the standard distillate. As his name suggests, Jujuan is not afraid of the “funk” or raw plant taste the full spectrum extract can have, as its effects can be stronger and more profound.
For now, the products are for medical use only, which makes sense considering the relief that full-spectrum nature can provide.
We couldn’t be more proud at Moses Roses to partner with Calyxeum, a black-owned and woman-owned cannabis brand. Our partnership recently launched a retail store in Detroit, that offers Calyxeum’s boutique flower genetics and so much more. Like their signature dessert gummy line and rosin-infused pre-rolls, too.
